The Problem

Sophie and Mark were six weeks away from their first baby, and the nursery had become the room they avoided.

Every online order, every kind hand-me-down from relatives and every flat-pack box had ended up in there, still in its packaging. Baby clothes from newborn right up to 18 months were jumbled together in bags for life. Nothing was sorted, nothing had a home, and nobody was quite sure what they actually needed close at hand for those first few months.

Sophie described walking into the room and feeling her chest tighten. She wanted to feel excited. Instead she felt behind before the baby had even arrived.

That is such a common feeling in the last weeks of pregnancy, and I hear it from almost every first-time parent I work with.

What she needed

She did not need more baby things. She needed to know what to keep close, what could be stored for later, and a way of finding everything during a night feed without turning on every light in the room.

What I did

We started with a cup of tea and a chat about how the first few months would actually look, because nesting can bring a lot of pressure with it. Then we sorted everything into stages: what they would reach for in the first three months, and what could wait.

Clothes for 3 to 6 months and beyond went into clearly labelled boxes on the top shelf, so the drawers held only what fits right now.

Then we planned the room around the journeys they would make most often:

  • A changing station arranged by the one-hand rule, with wipes, nappies, muslins and cream all within reach without turning away from the baby.
  • A night feeding station with everything needed for a 3am feed in one place.
  • A compact caddy for downstairs, stocked with nappies, feeding bits, water, snacks and muslins, so the early weeks did not mean endless trips up the stairs.

We also gave the sentimental things a home from day one, with a keepsake box ready for cards, scan photos and hospital tags, so nothing precious ended up lost in a random drawer.

The result

The room went from a source of stress to the calmest room in the house. Everything they needed was within arm's reach, and everything they did not need yet was stored and labelled for later.

Sophie told me afterwards:

"I was in a complete spiral every time I looked at all the baby things. Helen didn't just organise our nursery; she took the anxiety away and gave us a peaceful space ready for our daughter. Having everything within arm's reach made those first postpartum weeks so much easier."

Why this matters

Preparing for a baby is emotional as well as practical. When the room is ready, some of the worry goes with it.

You cannot organise your way out of the sleepless nights, but you can make sure that at 3am, everything you need is exactly where your hand expects it to be.
