Garage Declutter: How to Get Your Garage Back

Garages quietly fill up with boxes from the last move, bikes nobody rides and tins of paint from three decorating projects ago. Here is how to make it work for you again.

Pick a dry day

Garages are easiest to sort when you can pull everything out onto the drive and see it all at once.

Sort into zones

  • Garden and outdoor
  • Tools and DIY
  • Sports and bikes
  • Long-term storage (seasonal decorations, keepsakes)
  • Recycling, tip and donation

Be honest about the "one day" items

Broken items waiting to be fixed, and spares of spares, take up the most room. If it has not been used in two years, it is probably ready to go.

Use the walls

Wall hooks for bikes and garden tools, and sturdy shelving for labelled boxes, free up the floor. Clear boxes help you see what is inside at a glance.

Paint and chemicals

Check your local household waste recycling centre for safe disposal of old paints and chemicals rather than putting them in household bins.

How I help

I help you make the decisions, set up zones that make sense for your family and take donations away so the space stays clear.
