Reclaim Your Spare Room in One Day: Taming the Dumping Ground

Almost every home has one. The room where things go when there is nowhere else for them. The door stays shut when guests visit, and every time you walk past it you feel a little heavier.

Decide what the room is for

A guest room? An office? A craft space? A room trying to be everything ends up being nothing. Choose its main job first.

Clear the floor first

Bring everything into the middle and sort into three areas: belongs here, belongs elsewhere in the house, and leaving the house. The "elsewhere" pile is usually the biggest surprise.

Deal with the leaving pile the same day

Bags for donation go straight in the car. Recycling goes out. Anything left in the room overnight has a habit of staying.

Give what remains a proper home

Use storage that suits the room's job. Labelled boxes on shelves, a slim chest of drawers, or under-bed storage for guest linen.

Keep it working

Once a month, spend ten minutes putting back anything that has drifted in.

How I help

A full 7-hour session is often exactly enough to take a spare room from overwhelming to usable, with the donations already on their way.
